An Event to Treasure

One of the highlights of our events schedule is undoubtedly The County Club Car Treasure Hunt, with a set of fiendishly difficult clues leading competitors through some glorious countryside, before arriving at High Clandon Vineyard for a private tour, a picnic, and a spot of wine tasting.

Beginning with coffee and croissants at The County Club, the ‘race’ began in somewhat less than auspicious circumstances with a traffic light failure less than 100 yards from The Club, but from there on it was sunshine and laughs all the way.

In fact, the slight signal malfunction acted as a wonderful reminder that the day was more about the journey, and not the race, after all what’s the point of spectacular scenery if you don’t take the time to appreciate it?

A brief stop at The Parrot for coffee, and it was straight back onto the road. Well, apart from one rather splendid cream coloured motor car requiring ever such a small push to get going. The day was a great opportunity for Club members, and their guests to enjoy each other’s company in friendly competition, and while some of the questions might have caused a bit of head scratching, there were no reports of resorting to Google.

Questions ranged from the cryptic ‘Home of the Gentleman in the velvet waistcoat?’ to the observational ‘What cars do Bell & Covill sell?’ while a left fork in Loxley simply asked ‘Pestilential fowl?

More than thirty questions were posed along the journey, keeping co-drivers and passengers busy with their Biros, and we couldn’t help but notice that an awful lot of the questions related to pubs…probably just a coincidence?

Brilliantly, and carefully organised by Martin and Carol Coakley, the competition winners were Club Members Julienne Davies, and Jane Randall, in their Mercedes, a classic case of German engineering meeting good old British intellect.

Club General Manager Julian Bounds commented that ‘the day was a great success, it was a pleasure to open the Club on a Sunday morning and welcome so many enthusiastic competitors. Here’s to next year’s event.’
