Dr David Robert Starkey, CBE, is a British historian best known for his work on Tudor England and his high-profile television documentaries such as The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Monarchy. Educated at Cambridge and long a lecturer at the London School of Economics, he became one of Britain’s most recognisable public historians, noted for his sharp style and provocative commentary. While celebrated for bringing history to wide audiences, Starkey has also been a deeply controversial figure—facing criticism for outspoken remarks, most notably in 2011 on the London riots and in 2020 for comments about slavery, which led to the loss of fellowships, awards, and publishing contracts.
